Find Books Using OneSearch

The Library provides access to more than 300,000 books in both print and electronic formats. To find them, use the OneSearch box on the Library's homepage.

Keep in mind that when you use One Search, you are searching a selection of the Library's article databases as well as books and ebooks. If you don't want to see article results, use the limiters on the left side of the page to narrow your results.

In the Availability area of the Refine your results menu, click the Held by library link and click the APPLY FILTERS button.

You will now be looking at list of print books in LAVC Library that include your keywords. If you do not see the Held by library option in the Availability area it means LAVC Library does not have any print books matching the keywords you used in your search.

Print Books

Print books will say "book" beneath an image of the jacket cover. If you find a book you'd like to use, you must confirm the book's call number and status. The call number corresponds to the book's subject classification, and you will need this number to locate the book on the shelf. The status is also important. Here are some common statuses:

  • STACKS -- this means the book is available on the shelf for a 28-daycheckout. Our stacks are located on the West side of the Library
  • RESERVE -- this is a reserve book, which means it is a required book for a class. Reserve books are for 2-hour checkout, and must be requested at the circulation desk.
  • REFERENCE -- reference books are self-service, but cannot be checked out. These books are located on the East side of the Library.
  • OUT OF LIBRARY -- the book isn't available because it's checked out to someone else. If you'd like to prevent the book from being renewed, and receive a notification upon its return, you may place a hold. Sign in and place a request to have the book held for you, or sent to LAVC from another district library for you to check out.

If you have trouble locating a book on the shelf, visit our Reference Desk and a librarian will be happy to assist you. Information about the Library's circulation policies (e.g. "How long can I keep this book?") can be found on the Library's policies page.
