Counseling 20 Career Paper

Using OneSearch to Find Ebooks and Articles on Careers

After visiting some of the websites on the previous page, try using OneSearch -- the big search bar at the top of the LAVC Library homepage (see screenshot below)-- to find ebooks, articles and other Library resources related to your career or interests.

To begin, keep your search terms broad (for example: nursing career or graphic design career). Later, if you'd like, you can narrow your results down by source type and date. There's also a good chance your career will be covered in a "job/career guide"  -- a book that collects information about many different careers, with separate entries/chapters for each one -- so you may want to consider more general searches like career choice or best jobs as well.

Tip: Advanced Search + "Vocational Guidance"

To find more sources in OneSearch, try clicking "Advanced Search" (located near the search bar on a results screen) and add the phrase vocational guidance to your search, like this:

Advanced search tip: Combine "vocational guidance" as subject with keyword for any career

Recommended Ebooks for General Career Exploration

The ebooks below are great for helping you discover your strengths, choose a career field, and land a job. They are intended as general sources that you begin consulting at the start of your career exploration -- if, instead, you're looking for ebooks that focus on specific careers and jobs, we recommend including those specific job titles and/or career fields in your searches.

Tip: after clicking on a title below, look for the link under "View Online" to be taken to the full-text of the book. If you are using the Library website from off-campus, you may be asked to log in.  Please follow these directions for logging into the Library website from off-campus.
